The path to medicine for underrepresented, low income, and first-time students has steeper hills than that of their peers. Roughly 50% of medical students come from the top quintile of household income, and ~75% come from the top two quintiles of household income. This distribution has not changed in three decades. Nevertheless, data suggests that students with these backgrounds apply in relatively high numbers. Structural barriers, such as the lack of ready access to premedical advising and uncertainty about planning for the costs of applying to medical school, prevent underrepresented, low income, and first-time students from successfully matriculating into medical school.
We are a nonprofit organization started by students for students. We provide students of all backgrounds with mentorship and free access to validated, up-to-date information about successfully applying to medical school, particularly from a disadvantaged background.
Our guide covers everything about applying to medical school from start to finish, starting with a description of whether medicine is right for you to how to pick a school and negotiate financial aid packages.
Med Legs aims to increase awareness of the narratives of first generation and/or low income (FGLI) medical students and to build a community of support for FGLI individuals through the creation of an accessible, free resource that allows listeners to hear from guests and the hosts on a number of FGLI-related topics
